What is Ziyarat?

Ziyarat (زیارت) is derived from the Arabic root "z-w-r" (زور), meaning "to visit." In Islamic tradition, Ziyarat refers to the pious act of visiting sacred sites, shrines, and tombs of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his blessed family (Ahlul Bayt), the Imams, and other righteous individuals.

More specifically, Ziyarat also refers to the sacred texts and salutations that are recited during these visits or from a distance. These texts express devotion, love, and spiritual connection to the holy personalities, seeking their intercession and blessings.

The practice of Ziyarat is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition, with numerous hadith emphasizing its spiritual rewards. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Whoever visits my grave, my intercession becomes obligatory for him." Similarly, visiting the graves of the Imams and reciting their Ziyarat carries immense spiritual merit.
